I have forced galamseyers to reclaim over 30 acres of degraded land — Atwima Kwanwoma MCE

The Atwima Kwanwoma Municipal Assembly in Ghana has successfully reclaimed over 30 acres of land that had been severely degraded by illegal mining activities, according to Municipal Chief Executive, Grace Agyemang Asamoah. Before her tenure, abandoned mining pits left behind posed serious risks to residents and caused significant environmental damage.

In response, the Assembly established a committee to oversee the reclamation process, leading to the restoration of more than 30 acres so far. The District Environmental Health Officer, Ernest Boakye, noted that the degraded lands are gradually regaining their nutrients, making them suitable for farming activities in the years to come.

Asamoah expressed optimism that additional degraded lands would be reclaimed by the end of 2027. She emphasized that the reclaimed areas are now safe and will soon be covered with palm plantations. The Assembly is actively working to protect the reclaimed lands from illegal mining, and any offenders will face arrest. Boakye called on residents, assembly members, and traditional authorities to collaborate with the government to ensure the full restoration of all degraded lands in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality.
