I have forced galamseyers to reclaim over 30 acres of degraded land — Atwima Kwanwoma MCE

Atwima Kwanwoma Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Grace Agyemang Asamoah has reported significant progress in reclaiming degraded land from illegal mining activities in her district. She stated that over 30 acres of land had been restored, which had been negatively impacted by illegal mining practices. Prior to Asamoah's appointment, the area was littered with abandoned mining pits, posing significant risks to residents and causing severe environmental damage.

To oversee the reclamation efforts, the assembly established a committee, leading to the successful restoration of more than 30 acres of land so far. Asamoah expressed optimism about reclaiming additional degraded lands by the end of 2027. During her tour of reclamation sites, she noted the improvement in the condition of roads leading to Nweneso I, II, and III, as they were previously degraded and unsafe for environmental purposes.

She emphasized that the reclaimed areas are now covered and will soon be suitable for palm plantation activities. Asamoah also warned illegal miners to stay away from the reclaimed sites, threatening arrest for offenders. The District Environmental Health Officer, Ernest Boakye, added that the reclamation process is gradually aiding in the restoration of the district's ecosystem. He expressed confidence that the degraded lands would regain their nutrients, potentially becoming suitable for farming activities in the future.

Boakye called for collaboration between residents, assembly members, and traditional authorities in Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality with the government and the assembly to ensure all degraded lands are fully restored.
