Anwar Gargash: The UAE is committed to deterrence, dialogue with Iran as it pushes ahead with development

Dubai: UAE Diplomatic Adviser Anwar Gargash emphasized the country's commitment to both deterrence and dialogue with Iran while pushing forward with its development agenda, during a session at the Arab Media Summit. Gargash explained the UAE's strategy comprises two parallel tracks: crisis management and long-term regional diplomacy, ensuring security while maintaining economic growth. The collapse of the previous regional security order necessitates new understandings, he said.

Gargash underscored the UAE's focus on deterrence and sovereignty protection alongside the flexibility needed for dialogue with Iran. The country's leadership is committed to its sovereignty and people's safety while pursuing its "geo-economic" policy and maintaining engagement with countries worldwide. He cited President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's recent trip to Germany as proof of Abu Dhabi's determination to keep its international and economic goals on track.

Gargash distinguished between maintaining relations with Iran and rebuilding trust, highlighting that the latter would require years due to the aggression faced by GCC countries. While immediate tensions must cease, he argued that negotiations on a new regional future cannot proceed while threats and attacks persist. He suggested that Iran should take steps like publicly acknowledging its attack on Gulf states as a mistake and adjust its approach towards Gulf states.

The UAE's neighboring countries could contribute to Iran's recovery and restoring its economic prospects, Gargash suggested, noting the differing decision-making centers within Iran. He described these divergent circles as "divergent" rather than at war, which explains the varied rhetoric from Tehran. The Arab Media Summit, held in Dubai from September 15 to 17, featured discussions on the region's political, economic, and technological changes.
