Grey’s Anatomy Season 23: The original cast, then and now. Who’s long gone and who is still here?
Grey's Anatomy Season 23 premieres October 15, and if you're expecting a nice cast reunion, buckle up, because the 'originals' section of this roster has been getting demolished for two decades now. The original nine doctors from Grey's Anatomy debuted in 2005, with Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, Alex, George, Bailey, Webber, Burke, and Derek. Twenty seasons and a global pandemic later, only three original members remain fully employed at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital: Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Webber (James Pickens Jr.), and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo).
Webber was initially meant to retire, but he remains a crucial figure in the show. Ellen Pompeo has taken a reduced role since Season 19, primarily narrating and making occasional guest appearances. The rest of the original cast has seen various exits, such as Isaiah Washington (Burke), T.R. Knight (George O Malley), Katherine Heigl (Izzie), Sandra Oh (Cristina), Patrick Dempsey (Derek), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), and recent passings of Eric Dane and Chyler Leigh.
The only newcomers joining the original cast in Season 23 are James Wolk as Dr. Seth Norton, a character from the private medical center Olympic Regent Health.
