Goldsmith shop robbed of RM1mil for second time in two years [WATCH]

SUNGAI PETANI: Early last evening, a group of four masked individuals wielding hammers and sharp weapons conducted a second armed robbery at a goldsmith shop within a local shopping center. At approximately 7:20 PM, the perpetrators shattered three display cases and made off with a collection of valuable jewelry. The Kuala Muda police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, informed the public that two men entered the premises and were believed to have stolen the gold items, while their accomplices waited around 20 meters away.

The estimated losses, totaling between RM700,000 and RM1 million, are still under investigation as the goldsmith shop owner awaits a complete list of missing jewelry. Two employees were present at the time of the incident but faced no injuries. Members of the public attempted to assist, retrieving some of the dropped or abandoned jewelry, which was subsequently handed over to the police.

Hanyan advised caution, warning that the suspects might possess more dangerous weapons, urging the public to prioritize safety. He appealed for witnesses to provide information, including physical descriptions, speech patterns or any suspicious details, to aid in the ongoing investigation. The case is being probed under sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code, which pertain to gang robbery and armed robbery, respectively.

Punishments for convictions can include up to 20 years imprisonment and whipping. Notably, this incident is the second such robbery at the same jewelry shop within a two-year span, with the earlier robbery in 2024 reportedly resulting in losses amounting to roughly RM1 million.
