Ghana Jollof case: NETRIGHT demands transparency over remand of Salomey Awity Baffoe

Hawa Koomson, a rising political figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged for immediate bail for Madam Salomey Baffoe, a 40-year-old nurse and mother of three, who has been detained over alleged connections to the anonymous online account "Ghana Jollof." In a press release dated September 17, 2026, Koomson detailed that Baffoe was taken from her home in Hansua, Techiman, in the middle of the night on September 13, and went missing for two days.

Initially, both law enforcement officials and the regional National Security agency denied any knowledge of her arrest. However, she was later brought before the Adenta Circuit Court and remanded. Koomson argued that the 48-hour constitutional limit for detention had been exceeded and that the prosecution had not provided her defense with the charge sheet prior to the hearing.

The former minister expressed her concern for the treatment of Baffoe, a nurse working at Abrafi Hospital, who was far from her family and unable to care for her three children. She emphasized that suspicion alone is not enough to deprive someone of their freedom. Koomson appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene on Baffoe's behalf, requesting her release to be with her children while the investigation continues.

She demanded transparency regarding the reasons for her detention and urged authorities to provide regular access for her family and legal counsel. Koomson also called for an end to night-time arrests and the circulation of women's photographs based on mere suspicion.
