DKU accuses Negeri Sembilan exco of treason, coup attempt against Tuanku Muhriz

Negri Sembilan's state executive council has been accused by the state's Legal and Regulatory Council (DKU) of treason and attempting to overthrow the state's ruler, Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz. The DKU, through law firm Halim & Ismail, claims the executive council's actions are unconstitutional, void, and amount to a coup d'etat and treason, which could be punishable under the Penal Code and other relevant laws.

According to the DKU's letter, which was addressed to Negri Sembilan Chief Minister Datuk Ismail Lasim and copied to the state executive council members, the council relied on an April 19, 2026 proclamation to declare Tuanku Muhriz's removal. However, the DKU argues the proclamation did not meet the mandatory conditions under Article 10 of the Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri Sembilan 1959 and is thus "null and void and of no legal effect."

The law firm's clients, the DKU, expressed shock at the exco's announcement, stating that the council does not have the jurisdiction, authority, or power to make such a declaration. The exco, in response, claims the proclamation was signed and sealed by the legitimate Undang, and the decision to remove Tuanku Muhriz was the absolute prerogative of the four ruling chiefs who elect the state ruler.

The DKU disputes this claim, citing Article 10 of the state constitution, which requires a thorough enquiry before a ruler can be removed. They argue the exco's conduct is unconstitutional and intended to overthrow and dethrone Tuanku Muhriz.
