Anthropic tries to make Claude stickier with launch of Docs and Slides

Anthropic is enhancing its Claude AI assistant for productivity tasks with the introduction of Claude Docs and Slides. While creating documents using Claude chats has been possible, the latest update introduces a rich-text editor directly within Claude. Users can request document or slide creation through the chat interface, and Claude will ask clarifying questions before starting.

It provides comments to explain its choices. Claude Docs files are stored in the Artifacts tab and can be exported as Word, PDF, Google Docs, or markdown files, with sharing options for real-time collaboration among colleagues. According to Arun Chandrasekaran, a Gartner analyst, this move positions Claude as an agentic platform for the full lifecycle of knowledge work.

Early demand is expected to be around template-driven work like status reports and board decks. Claude Docs usage counts towards a customer's Claude usage limits, with larger requests taking up more of the limit. Certain feature limitations include no version history, access levels, or external sharing for Team and Enterprise plans, and unavailability for customers using customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK), zero data retention (ZDR), or a HIPAA-ready configuration.

Claude Docs and Slides are currently in beta on paid plans, rolling out to Pro and Max plans first and are turned off by default for enterprise plans. The move to integrate productivity features into AI aligns with the strategies of other major AI providers like Microsoft and Google, who are embedding AI assistants and agents into existing productivity tools.

While Anthropic's Claude updates may help users get more done, analysts are doubtful about a large-scale shift from established productivity suites. The compatibility of Claude Docs with existing tools and workflows remains a key question. Anthropic has also announced the availability of Claude Design, which generates visual outputs like slides and prototypes, as well as Claude Cowork, which can perform multiple-stage tasks.

These features are now integrated, allowing users to access Claude's capabilities from any conversation without needing to decide which tool to use for a particular task.
