OpenAI Fires Back at Apple (AAPL)

OpenAI has responded to Apple's allegations of trade secret theft in a recent lawsuit, arguing that Apple failed to prove any confidential information was actually stolen by former Apple employees. Apple had sued OpenAI and two ex-Apple employees, Tang Tan and Chang Liu, in July, accusing them of misappropriating trade secrets related to hardware design, manufacturing, and supply-chain operations.

OpenAI dismissed Apple's claims as "a mess of Apple's own making," stating that California law permits employees to move freely between employers. The lawsuit highlights the shifting dynamics between the two companies, which previously partnered to integrate ChatGPT into Siri and Apple Intelligence features. Apple has since shifted its focus to Google's Gemini for Siri, reducing reliance on OpenAI.

While the legal battle may not directly impact Apple's AI roadmap, it serves as a strategic move to protect intellectual property and counter OpenAI's talent recruitment efforts. OpenAI has hired approximately 400 former Apple employees, which could force Apple to invest more in talent retention and increase its dependence on external AI providers.

This development may weaken Apple's competitive position in the AI landscape and raise concerns among investors regarding Apple's ability to sustain its premium valuation.
