Abducted South African journalist found dead with gunshot wounds

Veteran South African journalist Owen Ndlovu was discovered dead on Wednesday, just hours after being abducted in a township near Johannesburg. Ndlovu, a former presenter at the country's public broadcaster, the SABC, was seized while collecting his wife from a church in Katlehong. His lifeless body, bearing gunshot wounds, was found by residents the next day.

Police have launched a search for three suspects and are examining the events leading to Ndlovu's death, a situation that has once more highlighted South Africa's alarming levels of violent crime. The 54-year-old Ndlovu had gone to collect his wife from a religious service when the attackers struck, forcing him into their vehicle and driving off with him.

His Ford Raptor pick-up truck was later discovered abandoned in Walkerville, an area south of Johannesburg. Ndlovu's family expressed their devastation over his loss and thanked those who assisted in the search. Fellow journalist Lelo Mzaca remembered Ndlovu as a vibrant individual who brought enthusiasm and flair to sports broadcasting, praising his colorful and energetic life.

The provincial government called for community assistance in the investigation, emphasizing that tackling crime remains a top priority. Recent national police figures, covering April to June 2026, recorded over 5,000 murders and nearly 4,000 carjackings, underscoring the ongoing concern over armed robberies and vehicle hijackings in the country.
