Ninth woman’s body found as South African police probe string of deaths

On Thursday, South African authorities confirmed the discovery of a ninth unexplained death, this time in Dawn Park, east of Johannesburg. The victim was found half-naked, bearing bruises and stab wounds, though her identity remains unknown. This latest case adds to a disturbing series of unexplained deaths that have surfaced in the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area since July, with eight bodies recovered in total.

Police have deployed a multidisciplinary team of detectives, intelligence officers, and forensic experts to investigate, but are urging the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia noted that the cases appear distinct for now, cautioning against speculation. Victims identified so far include Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, 38, who vanished after a run and was found behind a hotel in Kempton Park, and Itumeleng Kekana and Dineo Evelyn Motapane, both 38, whose bodies were located in KwaThema and Kempton Park, respectively.

The killing spree began on July 15 with a body discovered in Kempton Park, leading to the arrest of a suspect two days later, who is currently in custody. However, this individual has not been linked to the broader string of deaths. The crisis has prompted high-level intervention from government officials, with President Cyril Ramaphosa promising a thorough investigation into the killings, described as a source of "fear and uncertainty" in South African communities.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has called for a firm approach, assuring the public that authorities are fully equipped to solve the case. In addition to announcing a 400,000 rand reward for information leading to arrests, police are urging families with missing relatives to come forward to assist in identifying the remaining victims.
