US Embassy trains 50 coaches, 300 female student-athletes

The U.S. Embassy in Ghana has concluded a sports diplomacy program that trained 50 coaches and 300 female student-athletes across Tamale, Kumasi, and Accra, aiming to bolster the country's grassroots women's football pipeline. The initiative, organized by the Public Diplomacy Section under the Department of State, featured workshops led by Amy Griffin, a 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup champion, and former Major League Soccer player Kofi Sarkodie.

The program, focused on female athletes aged 12 to 18, emphasized team culture, leadership development, and technical coaching skills, steering away from strict tactics to foster supportive foundations for young women. Participants reported a shift toward player empowerment, with local coaches noting the focus moved from mere sideline commands to creating an environment where each player feels recognized and valued.

Additional resources such as footballs, pinnies, water bottles, sling bags, and sweat towels were distributed to ensure the young athletes felt genuinely supported. The project utilized a structured model to maximize local impact, with coaches applying learned tactics immediately during evening sessions by leading drills for six youth players.

To ensure sustainability, participating coaches received footballs, while athletes received gear to build a self-sustaining foundation for women's football across the three regions. Daniah Eldridge, Education and Cultural Attaché at the U.S. Embassy, highlighted that the initiative draws on lessons from Title IX legislation to expand female sports participation, aiming to create a robust foundation to feed into the pipeline for the Black Queens.
