[UPDATED] Anwar to invite Myanmar president, push for Rohingya repatriation

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim plans to invite Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to visit Malaysia in a bid to speed up the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, according to a recent podcast interview. The intention is to foster a long-term solution to the issue, which has been causing concern among locals. Anwar emphasized that accepting the refugees was conditional upon Myanmar taking them back, with the possibility of a phased approach if 200,000 cannot be repatriated at once.

He criticized politicians who exploit the situation, stating that leaders should negotiate with the Myanmar government for the refugees' return. So far, 5,000 have been repatriated, with an additional 1,500 expected within the next one to two weeks. Malaysia's strong relationship with Myanmar provides a platform to advocate for the repatriation, which would alleviate security and economic burdens and reduce hostility among the populace.

Anwar also highlighted that Malaysia's current financial strain is due to the high costs associated with managing refugees in detention centers. The influx of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia can be traced back to previous administrations that organized large welcoming events. Anwar expressed frustration over being blamed for the influx, asserting that he is now the one addressing the issue.
