UK affirms solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its right to defend sovereignty

The United Kingdom has reiterated its unwavering support for Saudi Arabia amid ongoing tension with the Houthi militia in Yemen. During a UN Security Council session, UK Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Kate Foster affirmed the country's solidarity with Saudi Arabia, emphasizing their right to defend their security and sovereignty in accordance with international law.

Foster condemned the Houthi militia's attacks on Saudi Arabia, which have resulted in civilian casualties, damage to homes and residential areas, and disruptions to commercial aviation. She highlighted that the Houthi militia is seeking control along Yemen's Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical global shipping lane, posing a direct threat to international maritime security.

Foster warned of the humanitarian crisis, with over 126,000 people displaced and growing concerns over food insecurity, health, and protection needs. She demanded the immediate release of aid workers, UN personnel, and diplomatic staff detained by the Houthi militia and called for compliance with UN Security Council resolutions to prevent weapons transfers to the militia.

The UK reiterated its support for the UN-led peace process and urged the Houthi militia to cease attacks, de-escalate tensions, and return to a pathway towards peace.
