INEC to boost PWD participation in 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is taking steps to increase the involvement of persons with disabilities in the 2027 general elections. Through strategic discussions with organisations representing persons with disabilities, INEC aims to ensure these voters are adequately informed and involved throughout the electoral process.

Acting INEC Chairman Prof. Rhoda Gumus stated that the engagement is crucial as preparations for the 2027 elections progress. The Commission has legal and policy frameworks in place, such as Section 54 of the Electoral Act 2026 and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, to support the participation of persons with disabilities.

However, Gumus emphasized the need for innovative approaches to voter education, including disability-specific communication channels and assistive formats. According to the Commission's data, there are currently 137,487 registered persons with disabilities. Gumus encouraged the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities and other disability organisations to take ownership of the sensitisation process and ensure members receive timely and accurate information about voter registration, PVC collection, voting procedures, accessibility measures, and other electoral aspects.

INEC has already implemented measures such as Braille ballot guides, magnifying glasses, the EC30 PWD form, and sign-language interpretation during collation activities to improve accessibility for voters with disabilities.
