News chopper crash in LA kills three

A news helicopter flying in Los Angeles for a live broadcast crashed on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The unfortunate incident occurred close to the location of a previously reported deadly bus accident, where an SUV had collided with a bus, causing significant loss of life and injuries. As media outlets across the city scrambled to cover the bus crash, a loud bang was heard, leading some eyewitnesses to report seeing a helicopter crash approximately a block away, releasing thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

Aerial footage captured a sizable fire engulfing shipping containers, cars, and the remnants of the helicopter, with its damaged tail and rotors visible amidst the flames. While the exact identities of those aboard the helicopter remain unconfirmed, the Los Angeles police confirmed that it was indeed a media chopper. NBC4's live news coverage confirmed the helicopter belonged to the local station, and veteran news anchor Colleen Williams announced the tragic loss of three lives on scene, with one individual presumed deceased outside the crash site.

Emergency services, including dozens of firefighters, were dispatched to aid the victims, and four patients were assessed, with three confirmed deceased and one in critical but unknown condition at a nearby hospital. The crash highlights the intense competition among Los Angeles' media market, where numerous stations frequently employ aerial coverage to report on a wide array of incidents, from fires to high-speed chases.

Typically, a news media helicopter carries two personnel - the pilot and the reporter-camera operator who often provide live commentary from above the city's bustling skies.
