News chopper crash in LA kills three

A news helicopter covering a deadly bus crash in Los Angeles crashed on Tuesday, resulting in three fatalities according to initial reports. The helicopter, which had been deployed to cover the earlier incident where an SUV collided with a bus in Chatsworth, northwest of downtown, came down in a residential neighborhood, causing a fiery explosion.

Witnesses at the scene of the bus crash reported hearing a loud bang and observing the helicopter descending around a block away, releasing thick plumes of smoke. Aerial footage captured the aftermath, revealing a large fire that engulfed shipping containers, vehicles, and the wreckage of the helicopter itself, with its mangled tail and rotors visible amidst the flames.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene, deploying a significant number of firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Initial assessments by emergency medical services indicated that three individuals had tragically lost their lives at the crash site, one of whom appeared to be a pedestrian on the ground at the time of the incident. Another patient remained in a critical condition, undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

The local NBC4 affiliate live broadcasted the unfolding events, with veteran news anchor Colleen Williams confirming that it was indeed the station's own helicopter that had crashed. She expressed the team's shock at losing contact with their crew in the field and later receiving confirmation of the helicopter's identity.

Los Angeles, America's second-largest city, is known for its competitive and densely populated media landscape. News outlets frequently utilize aerial coverage, deploying helicopters to navigate the city's congested skies to report on a wide range of incidents, from fires to high-speed chases. Typically, a crew of two individuals operates a news media helicopter - the pilot and the reporter-camera operator who often deliver live reports from the air.
