Sokoto gov’t sets up panel to probe Lukuwa’s Shari’a issues

The Sokoto State Government has set up a 14-member Advisory Committee to investigate allegations surrounding controversial remarks made by Islamic scholars, which have caused public unrest. The committee, approved by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, is tasked with critically evaluating Shari’a law as it pertains to the issues raised by Mallam Musa Lukuwa and providing recommendations to the government.

The committee, chaired by Mallam Yahaya na Malam Boyi and Sarki Malamai, includes members representing various Islamic sects such as Izala in Kaduna, Tijjaniyyah, Qadiriyyah, Jama’atu Nasril Islam, and the Sultanate Council. Additionally, the state’s Commissioner of Religious Affairs, Sheikh Dr Jabir Maihula, and Malam Lawal Maidoki are part of the committee.

Barrister Gandi Umar Muhammad has been appointed as the secretary. The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within 14 days. The controversy stems from remarks allegedly made by Lukuwa, which have sparked reactions and raised concerns about maintaining peace in the region.
