New MyKad gets transparent window, dual-interface chip

Starting tomorrow, the national registration department (JPN) will release the upgraded MyKad, boasting a total of 53 security features, a significant increase from the previous 23. In a Facebook announcement, JPN highlighted the new design elements of the biometric passport-sized identity card, including a transparent window and a dual-interface chip.

The modern MyKad features a dynamic security hologram and a QR code, all aimed at enhancing its modernity and bolstering its security with the latest technologies. JPN's official website states that the new MyKad is constructed from high-durability polycarbonate, engineered to withstand bending, snapping, or cracking from daily use.

Additionally, the new design incorporates intricate fine geometric line work, called guilloche patterns, and rainbow printing that changes color tones based on the viewing angle. Personal details and profile photos are laser-etched directly into the core layers of the card, making it practically impossible to tamper with or remove information without causing irreversible damage to the card.

A smaller laser-engraved portrait embedded within the card offers protection against photo manipulation and identity theft. The JPN is prepared to issue the new MyKad at all 40 of its nationwide branches equipped with on-site printing facilities on the same day of issuance. Applications at branches lacking printing facilities will be processed within five working days.
