A celebrated eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and Inter Miami's leading scorer, Messi holds the record as Argentina's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, boasting 125 goals in 207 appearances. Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating the team's decision to honor Messi with a farewell match on October 6th at River Plate's Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Argentina's 2022 World Cup champions are also extended an invitation to attend the event, which the president described as an unforgettable occasion. Despite facing a 50% stadium capacity restriction due to previous violations of FIFA's disciplinary code, Argentina is set to host friendlies against Bolivia on September 30th in Cordoba and Burkina Faso on October 3rd, ensuring the punishment for their earlier infractions is served before the Benin game.

Midfielders Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, both suspended for their involvement in on-field incidents during Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Spain, are among the players not expected to feature in the Benin match.
