Greenland and Antarctica have lost 11,309 billion tonnes of ice since 1979, raising global sea levels by 31.4 millimetres, a new assessment finds. Faster-flowing glaciers accounted for 84% of the loss, while surface melting contributed 16%. Scientists say the findings highlight the long-term impact of warming oceans on polar ice sheets.
