Watch: Patel and Schiff squabble over FBI terminations during Senate hearing

The FBI's top law enforcement official, Kash Patel, is scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday for an oversight hearing. The Republican-controlled committee is expected to focus on Patel's efforts to address violent crime, drug trafficking, and implement the Trump administration's law enforcement priorities during his tenure.

However, Democrats are widely anticipated to highlight recent internal issues at the bureau, such as the mass dismissals of agents involved in investigations of former President Donald Trump, probes into Trump's political opponents, and Patel's mixed schedule of work and personal time.

Patel has previously testified before Congress on matters including the FBI's budget, but this will be his first appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which holds primary oversight authority over the bureau. The last Senate hearing with Patel in September was marked by heated exchanges with Democrats, including an instance where he shouted over California Representative Adam Schiff, who retorted that Patel was merely an "internet troll."

The committee's Democratic leader, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, demanded Patel's removal as director in April following a The Atlantic magazine article that alleged excessive alcohol consumption by the FBI chief. Patel subsequently filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against the magazine, claiming the article was false and a "malicious hit piece." The Atlantic magazine, however, maintained the integrity of its reporting and pledged to defend itself vigorously against what it deemed a "meritless lawsuit."
