US Supreme Court blocks Trump mail-in ballot restrictions

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump's efforts to impose stricter restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the November midterm elections. Out of the six conservative justices on the nine-member panel, only two dissented. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who concurred with the majority, stated that while Trump's plan might be legally enforceable in the long term, state and local election officials lacked the necessary time to implement the rule before the elections.

Following the ruling, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his opinion that the president's plan to make voting more difficult was unconstitutional. He emphasized that the court had no choice but to make the right decision. In the House, Representative Hakeem Jeffries described the court's action as blocking Trump's "diabolical scheme" to restrict mail-in ballots, stating that democracy had won and far-right extremists had lost.

In some states, such as North Carolina, mail-in ballots have already been sent to voters. Trump had signed an executive order imposing these restrictions on mail-in voting.
