Supreme court rejects Trump’s mail ballot restrictions for midterm elections

In a significant ruling on Monday, the US Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump's efforts to impose restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the November midterm elections. The court's decision denied Trump's request to suspend an order that had temporarily halted the implementation of the restrictive plan. While the majority opinion acknowledged the potential legality of Trump's plan in the long term, it highlighted the lack of time available for state and local election officials to reasonably enforce the rule before the elections.

The controversy began when Trump signed an executive order in March, alleging without substantiation that mail-in voting was susceptible to fraud. This claim prompted numerous legal challenges, primarily from Democratic-led states, who argued that the Constitution grants states the authority to govern election administration, not the federal government.

According to the order, the US Postal Service (USPS) would have to deliver ballots exclusively to voters listed on official voter registration rolls. However, state officials and a whistleblower from the USPS raised concerns about the lack of legal clarity and the rushed nature of preparations, which they feared could cause chaos before the November 3rd vote.

Several states, such as North Carolina, had already commenced sending mail-in ballots to eligible voters. Moreover, a USPS whistleblower had warned that a significant number of Americans might not receive their ballots due to the postal service's flawed and rushed operational systems. Despite his ongoing criticism of mail-in ballots, Trump himself had utilized this method in the recent Republican primary in Florida.

The president has long harbored suspicions of widespread fraud associated with mail-in voting, a claim he made without evidence and repeatedly linked to his unfounded assertion that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him by Democrat Joe Biden. Recent polls indicate that Trump's Republican Party is facing a significant threat of losing its narrow control of Congress in November, particularly in the House of Representatives.

If Democrats secure a victory, they have signaled their intention to impede Trump's agenda, potentially leading to impeachment proceedings for the third time.
