Ukraine has 'successfully tested' new interceptor against Russian jet-powered drones, Zelensky says

Ukraine announced on September 15 that it had successfully tested a new interceptor drone, designed to counter Russian jet-powered Shahed drones, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The announcement came after a briefing by Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi. Russia has been developing increasingly sophisticated Shahed-type jet-powered drones, such as the Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5, as well as the cruise missile-like Banderol loitering munition.

These drones are capable of reaching speeds up to 600 kilometers per hour, making them particularly challenging to intercept. In recent months, their usage has surged, with Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat reporting a fivefold increase in July compared to June. On August 31, Russia launched nearly 800 jet-powered drones toward Ukraine over a four-day period.

Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara stated on August 29 that Ukraine had conducted field tests on four potential interceptors against Russian jet-powered Shahed drones, though the details of these projects were not disclosed. Anatolii Hrapchynskyi, deputy director of an electronic warfare company and a reserve Air Force officer, explained that the use of jet-powered drones was a response to Russia's efforts to circumvent Ukraine's anti-aircraft defenses.

He noted that initially, Russian forces relied on expensive long-range weapons launched from aircraft, submarines, or coastal positions. However, Russia later incorporated jet-powered drones into its arsenal, as evidenced by an attack on Kyiv on September 15 that resulted in at least one death and 12 injuries. The strikes damaged residential buildings, a data center, and two gas stations in the Ukrainian capital.
