Ukraine successfully tests interceptor against faster Gerans as Russia floods its skies with drones

Ukraine successfully tested an interceptor capable of countering Russia's faster jet-powered Geran attack drones, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on September 15. The test comes amid Russia's increased deployment of these drones, which pose a new challenge for Ukrainian air defenses by reducing detection and engagement time while allowing Russia to conduct large-scale attacks.

A successful interceptor could provide Ukraine with a more affordable, scalable solution to counter this threat without relying heavily on scarce high-end air-defense missiles. Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi confirmed the successful test, which involved the interceptor striking a Russian Geran drone. However, the system still requires further refinement, including improvements to its control mechanisms.

Ukraine's efforts to bolster its air defenses against Russia's faster drones include developing a new layer of defense, expanding purchases of electronic warfare equipment, and reorganizing mobile fire groups and air-defense positions. Russia has been intensifying its drone attacks by making them faster and scaling them up. In September alone, Russia reportedly launched around 2,100 Geran drones against Ukraine, alongside nearly 1,700 guided aerial bombs and 78 missiles, targeting energy facilities, railways, businesses, and residential areas.

The faster Geran drones complicate Ukrainian defenses by providing less time to detect and engage them. Russia has also altered its drone usage patterns, launching attacks during the day in addition to nighttime strikes, creating a more complex challenge for Ukrainian air defenses.
