Two more plea deals reached in case of Penticton man killed in 2021

In a shocking turn of events, two more accused individuals in the 2021 murder case of Taig Savage have reached plea agreements, leaving the victim's mother, Tracey Savage, feeling that justice has not been served. Taig's lifeless body was discovered on the track field at Penticton Secondary School in September of that year. Four people were initially charged with second-degree murder, but three of the accused were minors at the time of the incident.

In September, one of the minors pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and now, the other two minors have also agreed to similar plea deals.

The family of the 22-year-old Penticton man feels a sense of injustice, as Tracey Savage revealed, "I held my granddaughter just recently, and I realized that my son will never meet her." The maximum sentence for manslaughter under the Youth Criminal Justice Act is three years, while second-degree murder carries a seven-year sentence.

Rob Dhanu, a former criminal crown prosecutor, explained that proving second-degree murder is difficult because the Crown must demonstrate the accused's intent to cause the victim's death. Dhanu added that murder cases become even more complex when multiple people are involved.

Isaac Jack, the only adult accused in this case, remains to be tried. His trial is scheduled for this spring, but Tracey Savage expressed concern about the potential impact on future proceedings, stating, "I hope that we are not sitting here another year from now in May 2027 when this court case gets rolling with the same expression and same face that I have today." A publication ban prevents the reporting of the specific circumstances revealed in court.
