Reynolds hails ‘tremendous upsides’ to AI amid warnings on threats

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has highlighted the "enormous benefits" of artificial intelligence (AI) while acknowledging the warnings from tech engineers about its potential dangers. Reynolds stated that the UK should not be "complacent" or "naive" about AI's impact, but emphasized that new models could enhance public services and the broader UK economy.

The comments came after a series of warnings from prominent AI figures, including Anthropic's Dario Amodei and Elon Musk, who have called for a slowdown in innovation due to the "serious" risks associated with the technology.

Reynolds acknowledged the concerns raised by these warnings, stating that people may be "worried" by some of the recent developments. He urged caution against being "hyperbolic" about the situation, noting that while there are risks, "there are some tremendous upsides" for individuals, such as improvements in public services, healthcare, and economic contributions.

Reynolds dismissed calls from some MPs for the introduction of a "kill switch" on AI, expressing uncertainty about the feasibility of such a mechanism, given the majority of models are developed in the US and China. He argued that major tech companies sharing their models with the AI Security Institute demonstrated that the UK was recognized for its expertise in the field.

The Secretary of State also refused to confirm if the government would make pre-release testing compulsory, emphasizing that Britain must remain a "player" in this rapidly evolving landscape. He advocated for further international cooperation involving the US and China to ensure safety.

The debate over AI development has intensified in the US, with Musk, Amodei, and OpenAI's Sam Altman advocating for a slowdown in innovation. However, former Anthropic engineer Jacob Coxon expressed genuine concern about the potential extinction of humanity within the next two years, attributing it to the risks posed by AI. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump dismissed the warnings as a "sick hoax," asserting that he possesses the "high IQ" necessary to safeguard the US and challenging the notion that AI represents a conspiracy or traitorous act.
