Norway Will Have an Impressive Whale-Shaped Museum in the Arctic

Norway set to unveil whale-themed museum in Arctic region

The Arctic town of Andenes in Norway will soon be home to an impressive sea creature-inspired museum, with architecture shaped like a whale emerging from the landscape. The Whale, as the project is known, is set to open its doors to the public starting June 4, 2027, after an official inauguration on the day before.

Designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, the museum's unique structure aims to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, rising from the rocky coastline of Andøya island. With a footprint of approximately 3,750 square meters, the complex will house around 1,800 square meters of exhibition space. A highlight of the design is its walkable roof, which serves as a public observation deck offering panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, and the Andenes horizon.

The museum's interior promises a multisensory experience, moving beyond traditional natural history museum displays. Key exhibits include the Species Gallery, showcasing the 90 whale species found across the globe and their anatomy. Visitors can also explore the Under the Skin installation, which delves into the physical structures of these marine mammals through sound, light, and visuals.

Another captivating element is the Soundscape, an immersive experience that recreates the sensation of being beneath the ocean through audio and visual cues. The museum will also feature life-sized sculptures, including a full-scale representation of a whale, emphasizing the immense size of these creatures and their role in human history, particularly in the context of industrial whaling and conservation efforts.
