Latest U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods take effect, with some changes

U.S. tariffs on select Canadian goods took effect on Tuesday, as Washington escalates its trade dispute with Canada. The White House announced last week that 50% tariffs would be imposed on goods accounting for roughly 0.6% of U.S. imports from Canada, including items such as outboard motorboats, metal and paper products. Conversely, 50% tariffs on certain goods representing about 0.5% of U.S. imports from Canada, like cement, sugar, toilet paper, and fishing rods, will be lifted.

These latest tariffs have emerged amidst an ongoing trade war between the two nations, following Canada's withdrawal from formal negotiations last month. Prime Minister Mark Carney alleged that the Americans made last-minute demands that would violate Canada's sovereignty. Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada retaliated with tariffs on American products.
