Latest U.S. tariffs take effect on a small number of Canadian goods, some removed

Washington implemented new U.S. tariffs on select Canadian goods on Tuesday as the two nations continue their trade conflict. The tariffs, billed at $205.00 plus GST for the first annual payment, will automatically renew at $233.00 plus GST every 52 weeks, marking a 10% discount off the regular annual price of $259.35. This tariff applies to a small portion of Canadian imports, such as outboard motorboats and metal and paper products, representing approximately 0.6% of U.S. imports from Canada.

Simultaneously, the United States is removing tariffs on certain Canadian goods, including cement, sugar, toilet paper, and fishing rods, which accounted for around 0.5% of U.S. imports from Canada. This move comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries following Canada's withdrawal from formal trade negotiations last month, which U.S. officials claim were made with conditions that undermined Canada's sovereignty.

The ongoing trade war has seen retaliatory tariffs imposed by both nations, with the latest round affecting nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, including alcoholic beverages.
