Latest U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods take effect, with some changes

U.S. tariffs on select Canadian products took effect on Tuesday, escalating Washington's ongoing trade dispute with its northern neighbor. The White House announced a 50% tariff on approximately 0.6% of U.S. imports from Canada, targeting goods such as outboard motorboats and various metal and paper products. Simultaneously, the administration announced the removal of 50% tariffs on around 0.5% of U.S. imports from Canada, which included essential items like cement, sugar, toilet paper, and fishing rods.

These latest tariffs arose amid a fluid trade war between the two countries following Canada's withdrawal from formal negotiations last month. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the Americans of making last-minute demands that would infringe upon Canada's sovereignty. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods in August, prompting Canada to retaliate with its own tariffs on American products.

In addition to the tariffs, Trump has issued bans on imports of Canadian-made liquor and certain dairy products, set to take effect on September 29.
