Iran dismisses US talks as Strait of Hormuz crisis deepens

The United States has dismissed talks with Iran as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz escalate. Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, warned against being distracted by President Donald Trump's conflicting messages regarding negotiations. Tehran has been demanding an end to US military operations, a blockade on Iranian shipping, and the lifting of sanctions as prerequisites for dialogue.

Iran also links the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to Washington meeting these demands. Contradictory statements from the US President highlight the significant divide between Washington and Tehran as the conflict continues and efforts to restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz face challenges. Despite reports of an oil tanker explosion in the strait, commercial traffic remains severely disrupted, with only four vessels transiting on Monday, compared to 10 the previous day.

Diplomatic setbacks have been reported, with Gulf states postponing discussions with Iran and Oman cancelling a scheduled meeting in Salalah. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have also expressed concerns over an Iran-Oman framework for managing navigation, leading to a delay in rescheduling talks. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister visited China, and the US is seeking to maintain its military presence, emphasizing its stockpiles of interceptors and missiles.
