India's Consumer Watchdog Escalates Probe Into Apple Over iOS 18 Warranty Row

India's consumer regulator is investigating Apple over alleged issues with the software warranty terms in its iOS 18 update, documents reveal. The probe stems from complaints that the update damaged iPhone functionality, leading users to pay high fees for repairs, according to sources. This development marks another challenge for Apple in a rapidly growing market where it is expanding manufacturing and market share, while also facing accusations of breaching domestic antitrust laws.

Apple is challenging the regulator's accusations, stating in an August letter that the lack of software warranty is standard in the global industry and that iOS 18 had no systemic problems. If found guilty, Apple could face fines and be required to provide refunds or modify its business practices. Smartphone manufacturers often face complaints following software updates.

In 2018, Italy fined Apple for not advising users about potential issues from the iOS 10 update and for not providing support for older iPhones. Last year, India's Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) received numerous complaints about the iOS 18 rollout in late 2024, which allegedly caused screen display and microphone malfunctions, prompting customers to pay for costly repairs.

On July 29, the regulator escalated the matter for a detailed investigation. The case alleges violations of consumer rights, according to the regulator. Apple maintains it did not identify issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India and will cooperate with the authorities to clarify the customer response to the software.
