Hundreds march in Toronto against Carney’s investment summit

On Monday, a crowd of hundreds gathered in downtown Toronto to protest Prime Minister Mark Carney’s investment summit. Protesters opposed projects that would expand fossil fuel infrastructure, increase military production, and transfer public assets to private investors. Labour, migrant rights, environmental, and social justice groups participated in the demonstration.

Despite having an approval rating above 60%, Carney is seen as antagonizing the more progressive portion of his Liberal Party by reversing climate policies and fostering ties with resource-extracting industries. Haley Asquin, a spokesperson for Common Horizon, expressed concern over projects like fossil fuels, artificial intelligence, and military-related industries at the summit.

The summit aims to connect about 100 global investors with Canadian CEOs, companies, and officials to spur investments or partnerships. Carney seeks to expand Canada's economic ties with investors and governments in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Protests also criticized government support for private investors through subsidies and tax incentives.
