Halifax Wanderers pitch privately-funded $100M stadium and sports hub

The Halifax Wanderers, a Canadian Premier League soccer team, have proposed constructing a $100 million stadium and sports hub on municipal land in Halifax. The privately-funded project, spearheaded by Wanderers owner Derek Martin, aims to address the city's long-standing need for a permanent soccer stadium. Currently, the Wanderers play at Wanderer's Grounds in downtown Halifax, a temporary facility without amenities like running water and permanent grandstands.

The proposed stadium would feature a 650-space parking area beneath the facility, which could also be utilized by visitors to the nearby QEII Health Sciences Centre. Additionally, the plan includes space for the Halifax Lancers horse riding school and a new lawn bowling green. To further benefit the community, a sports hub at Maybank Field in Dartmouth would provide enhanced facilities for soccer and other community sports.

Derek Martin stated that the project would cost around $100 million and would be privately funded, with HRM involved through a 99-year lease. While many council members expressed enthusiasm for the proposal, concerns were raised about the rapid timeline and the implications of private investment on public land. The motion for a staff report to consider the proposal's implications passed 15-1.
