Democrats accuse FBI director of intimidating journalists

Democratic lawmakers have accused FBI Director Kash Patel of abusing his authority to intimidate journalists. During a contentious hearing, Patel vehemently denied the claims and praised the FBI's achievements in crime reduction, drug enforcement, and fraud prosecution. The heated four-and-a-half-hour session saw Patel and several Democrats trade personal insults.

Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat, accused the FBI director of using agency resources to target reporters, alleging that reporters had written about him and the bureau had visited their homes and subpoenaed their relatives. Patel dismissed the accusations as a "total lie" and filed a $250 million lawsuit against The Atlantic magazine and the author of a critical article, alleging defamation.

The Atlantic magazine had previously accused Patel of heavy drinking and suggested he might lose his directorship, following an FBI "insider threat investigation."

Patel has faced criticism for purging agents deemed disloyal to former President Donald Trump. While he claimed there was no purge and most of the exiting agents retired voluntarily, senators expressed skepticism. The hearing also touched on the FBI's decision to relax hiring standards for applicants involved in prostitution or bestiality, which Patel clarified referred to victims, not perpetrators.

Democrats expressed concerns over Patel's promise to potentially send FBI agents to polling places during the upcoming midterm elections, emphasizing the importance of election integrity.
