Democrats accuse FBI director of intimidating journalists

Senate Democrats accused FBI Director Kash Patel of abusing his position to intimidate journalists, during a fiery congressional hearing on Tuesday. Patel vehemently denied the allegations, praising the FBI's record in reducing violent crime, combating drug trafficking and prosecuting fraud. The combative hearing saw Patel and several Democratic senators exchange personal attacks.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker called Patel a "thug" and accused him of using the FBI to target reporters. He alleged that reporters had written about the president and the FBI had proceeded to their homes and subpoenaed their mothers. Patel dismissed these claims, calling them "total lies."

Patel revealed that he had filed a $250 million lawsuit against The Atlantic magazine and the author of a defamatory article accusing him of excessive drinking and potential job loss. The Atlantic criticized Patel for allegedly engaging in frequent alcohol consumption and suggesting he was at risk of losing his role as FBI director.

The FBI's decision to lift hiring standards, allowing applicants with a history of prostitution or bestiality, sparked controversy. Senator Dick Durbin questioned the rationale behind this change, suggesting applicants who engaged in these acts were victims not perpetrators. Patel clarified that applicants who had been victims of bestiality were protected to avoid punishing them further.

Patel also faced criticism for declining to rule out sending FBI agents to polling places during the November midterm elections. He emphasized the importance of election integrity and stated that the FBI would not shy away from its role in ensuring a secure voting process.
