Christian Leaders Seek Repeal Of Anti-Conversion Law, Demand Reservation Benefits

Bengaluru, September 15: A delegation from the Christian community, headed by Bengaluru Archbishop Peter Machado, met with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge. The delegation sought the repeal of the anti-conversion law and a separate 1% reservation for Christians in Karnataka. The Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022 was enacted during the BJP government's tenure, which was later announced by the Congress government in June 2023 to be repealed.

However, no action has been taken on this demand. This law prohibits conversions through misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement, fraudulent means, or by promising marriage, with penalties of up to 3-5 years in prison and a fine of ₹25,000. The law has been a source of concern for the Christian community, particularly due to the potential targeting of its members.

The delegation expressed its concerns regarding the legislation's provisions and its implications on the Christian community's constitutional freedoms and the right to practice and propagate their faith. Additionally, they demanded a 1% reservation for Christians under the Backward Classes category, citing the socio-economic challenges faced by certain sections of the Christian community.

Currently, Christians fall under Category - 3B, sharing a 5% reservation with five other communities and subgroups, including Lingayats. The delegation also urged Kharge to consider nominating a Christian representative to the Legislative Council, currently represented by Ivan D Souza, to provide the community with a voice and a platform to contribute constructively to the legislative process.

Lastly, they urged Kharge to ensure adequate representation of Christians on various government boards, corporations, and other statutory bodies, highlighting the importance of fair representation in public administration. Kharge reportedly listened patiently to the delegation's demands and assured them that he would raise their concerns with the government.
