Badar Khan Suri blasts 'shallow' Trump administration at immigration hearing

Georgetown University scholar Badar Khan Suri, an Indian citizen and US resident, criticized the Trump administration's arguments in immigration court as "specious" and "shallow" during a hearing on Tuesday. Suri, who is married to a US citizen, gained global attention in 2023 when he became one of the earliest targets of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents based on his speech supporting Palestinian rights.

The government's case is accused of being politically motivated, with supporters noting that Suri's Jewish community is standing by him and rejecting the administration's attempts to weaponize faith. Nader Hashemi, director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown, emphasized the "deep anti-Palestinian nature" of the US government under President Donald Trump.

The case highlights the targeting of Suri's wife, who is from Gaza, as a means to harass her husband, who is an American citizen. The ACLU is representing Suri, who is currently in a two-tiered legal fight as his federal habeas case continues while his immigration case proceeds in an immigration court.
