Amin Amidu Sulemani appointed ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation

Ghanaian engineer Amin Amidu Sulemani has been appointed as the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). His appointment was confirmed at the ECOWAS Assembly in Abuja, Nigeria, where the regional organization welcomed a new management team for the 2026-2030 period.

Mr Sulemani's role will encompass infrastructure, energy, transport, and digital development as ECOWAS strives to enhance regional integration and economic cooperation. He will be under the guidance of Senegal's General Birame Diop, who has taken office as President of the ECOWAS Commission. His responsibilities will include three directorates: Digital Economy and Post, Energy and Mines, and Transport.

A key aspect of his mandate is to aid in the implementation of the ECOWAS Regional Infrastructure Development Plan, aimed at boosting connectivity and promoting integrated infrastructure projects throughout the sub-region. This plan concentrates on transport networks, energy infrastructure, and digital connectivity, with the ultimate goal of boosting trade, investment, and economic integration.

Sulemani's extensive expertise in engineering, public administration, and diplomacy will be valuable in his new position. Prior to this role, he served as Ghana's Minister for Roads and Highways and also possessed diplomatic experience. His appointment provides Ghana with a prominent position in one of ECOWAS Commission's crucial portfolios during a time when the region continues to confront infrastructure development, energy supply, and digital connectivity challenges.

The newly appointed ECOWAS leadership is anticipated to emphasize strengthening cooperation among member states and generating investment for regional development throughout its four-year tenure.
