Amin Amidu appointed ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy

Ghana's Amin Amidu Sulemani has been named ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalisation. This appointment came at the ECOWAS Assembly in Abuja, Nigeria, where the regional bloc announced its new leadership for the 2026-2030 period. Mr Sulemani's duties will encompass infrastructure, energy, transport, and digital development as ECOWAS aims to enhance regional integration.

He will be part of the ECOWAS Commission's new management team led by Senegal's General Birame Diop, who is now President of the Commission.

Mr Sulemani's role will involve managing three directorates: digital economy and post, energy and mines, and transport. He will be instrumental in implementing the ECOWAS Regional Infrastructure Development Plan, which seeks to boost connectivity and promote integrated infrastructure projects across member states. This plan covers transport networks, energy infrastructure, and digital connectivity, with the goal of promoting trade and economic integration within the region.

Mr Sulemani's background in engineering, public administration, and diplomacy will be valuable in his new position. Prior to this appointment, he served as Ghana's Minister for Roads and Highways and held diplomatic roles. His appointment places Ghana in a senior role within ECOWAS's key portfolio at a time when the region is grappling with significant challenges in infrastructure, energy supply, and digital connectivity.

The new ECOWAS leadership is anticipated to concentrate on strengthening cooperation among member states and securing investment for regional development throughout their four-year term.
