Shingange cleared for election at COSATU Congress

COSATU has obtained a legal opinion that clears Mike Shingange to stand for election at the upcoming 15th National Congress, despite a dispute over his status. The issue arose when some affiliated unions, such as the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), refused to provide their delegates' lists, demanding clarification on Shingange's standing as COSATU's first deputy president.

COSATU General-Secretary Solly Phetoe stated that the legal opinion also grants clarification on SACCAWU, allowing it to vote with recognized delegates. Shingange was previously suspended by his union but is not expelled, making him eligible to run for any position at the congress, including his current role as first deputy president. NUM's Phillip Vilakazi noted that the congress must continue despite the disagreement.
