Steve Smith Unsure About Ashes 2027 Tour As Australia Star Targets 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Malahide, Sep 14: Australian cricket star Steve Smith has expressed uncertainty about his involvement in the 2027 Ashes tour of England, indicating he is managing his Test career on a match-by-match basis. The 37-year-old is currently playing for the Amsterdam Flames in the European T20 Premier League. With 125 Test matches under his belt and 37 centuries to his name, Smith is the second-ranked men’s Test batsman globally, trailing only England's Harry Brook.

Smith remains uncertain about his participation in the Ashes, stating, "I don’t even know if I’ll be there yet. I’m kind of a series-by-series proposition, as I’ve been for a while." Despite the ambiguity, he remains optimistic about potentially winning the series. However, his primary focus currently lies on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with Smith saying, "Right now probably it’s just the Olympics (as a goal)".

The veteran batter has not set a definitive retirement date, but he has hinted at a possible shift toward franchise T20 cricket in the future. Smith expressed his desire to continue playing T20 cricket for a while, acknowledging, "I still like to think I could play T20 cricket for a while. What’s next for me when I finish? I’m not sure, but yeah, hopefully a bit more time left playing."

He reflected on his decade-long career, stating, "I’ve achieved a lot in the game. It’s been a great ride for the last 15 years or thereabouts. I’ve had a lot of fun. I’m still enjoying it, so I don’t have an end date, we’ll wait and see." Smith remains confident as Australia prepares for their upcoming Test series against South Africa in October.
