Kenyatta University relay teams qualify for Open Lanes Varsity Invitational finals

Three relay teams from Kenyatta University have advanced to the finals of the Open Lanes Varsity Invitational after competing in campus-wide qualifiers. Organized by Swiss sportswear brand On, the event brings together student-athletes from universities across Nairobi for a chance at inter-university recognition and a fully funded race weekend in South Africa.

Qualification marks the beginning of the knockout phase, where teams from Kenyatta University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Strathmore University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), the University of Nairobi, and Riara University will compete in relay races. The grand prize finals are set for October 3, 2026, at Nyayo Stadium.

Four exceptional student-athletes from the participating teams will be chosen to win a fully funded trip to South Africa, an opportunity to compete in a new environment and experience South Africa’s running culture. On's Director of Africa, Navalayo Osembo, stated that the initiative aims to uncover emerging talent and foster connections among young people through sport and culture.

The brand, which has established partnerships with local runners and communities in Kenya, hopes to inspire individuals to engage with sport and culture in new ways. On's presence in Kenya has grown through collaborations with local runners and athletes, including Hellen Obiri, Patrick Kipngeno, Mercy Chepngeno, and South African 400-metre star Lythe Pillay.

The Open Lanes Varsity Invitational is a key component of On's broader ambition to create an ecosystem centered around movement and storytelling, promoting Kenya's strong running culture and providing opportunities for talent development.
