S. Korean Marines participate in U.S., Indonesia-led multinational drills

SEOUL, September 14 (Yonhap) — South Korean Marines have joined annual Super Garuda Shield multinational joint drills orchestrated by the United States and Indonesia, the Marine Corps announced on Monday. The two-week exercise, conducted from August 31 to September 14 in Lampung and Bandung, Indonesia, involved troops from 15 countries, including South Korea, Canada, and Japan. This marks the second time South Korean troops have participated in the drills, following their inaugural appearance last year.

During the drills, South Korean Marines engaged in various joint exercises, such as field training exercises (FTX) that simulated jungle warfare missions and cyber drills aimed at familiarizing troops with both cyber attack and defense capabilities. Initiated in 2007 as a bilateral exercise between the U.S. and Indonesia to enhance operational capabilities in jungle warfare, the Super Garuda Shield exercise has since grown into a large-scale multinational undertaking.
