How UAE cut traffic deaths by 74 per cent between 2011 and 2025

The Ministry of Interior in the UAE has reported a remarkable 74 percent reduction in traffic-related fatalities from 2011 to 2025. This impressive decrease is attributed to the implementation of a comprehensive traffic safety system that combines effective governance, stringent legislation, smart enforcement techniques, AI-driven monitoring, infrastructure enhancements, and nationwide awareness campaigns conducted by the Ministry and its affiliated police departments.

Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, spearheads these initiatives under the UAE's wise leadership, with the ambitious goal of halving road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Brig. Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harthy, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council at the Ministry, emphasized the system's proactive readiness to address various road safety challenges, citing close coordination among relevant authorities and a unified team approach.

The Federal Traffic Council has developed business-continuity plans to ensure uninterrupted traffic services and bolster preparedness across diverse circumstances. The Council's strategy revolves around creating a top-tier secure and safe mobility environment through advanced traffic systems, optimizing infrastructure efficiency, and refining traffic safety services.

A notable campaign, "Summer Without Accidents" 2026, concluded its operations effectively. The Ministry of Interior's efforts during the campaign centered on raising awareness about tyre safety, vehicle maintenance, and other critical aspects of road safety. Key priorities included ensuring proper tyre conditions, limiting vehicle loads to 60 centimeters in height, maintaining functional lighting systems, and preventing the presence of flammable materials inside vehicles.

The campaign also promoted adherence to traffic laws, safe speed limits, and proper vehicle distance maintenance.

To disseminate these crucial messages, the campaign employed multilingual awareness materials in Arabic, English, and Urdu across various social media platforms. This approach ensured broad community engagement and reinforced the importance of safe driving practices.
