Rescuers search for 129 still missing after ferry capsizes in Indonesia, killing six

Banjarmasin, Indonesia reported at least six fatalities and 129 missing after a ferry capsized in rough seas. The Virgo Transport 8, carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members, went missing early yesterday after departing from Surabaya in East Java. Six people were confirmed dead, while 108 survivors were rescued. Survivor Rinto Arahap recounted the chaos as passengers fought for life jackets, with the vessel tilting around 2.00am and rocking due to waves over two meters high.

Rescue efforts involved helicopters, navy vessels, and the search and rescue agency, battling waves up to 2.5 meters. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed the ship had capsized, while the first rescue ship arrived at Banjarmasin's pier that night. Survivors, including Arahap, described losing belongings and finding themselves adrift for hours before rescue.

Relatives anxiously checked a whiteboard updating rescued names, hoping for news of missing loved ones. The incident highlights the frequent maritime accidents in Indonesia due to lax safety standards and unpredictable weather.
