Indonesia says 6 killed, 129 missing after ferry capsizes off Java

Rescuers in Indonesia reported that at least six individuals lost their lives and 129 others remain missing following a ferry capsizing off the coast of Java on Sunday, according to Basarnas, the national search and rescue agency. The Virgo Transport 8, which carried 213 passengers and 30 crew members, lost contact with its shipping company early Sunday after departing from Surabaya in East Java.

The vessel was struck by adverse weather conditions. So far, one survivor has been found, raising the total number of rescued individuals to 108. The first rescue ship carrying survivors reached Banjarmasin, a city on the southern coast of Borneo island, before nightfall, as witnessed by an AFP reporter. Survivors were transported to waiting ambulances, some in wheelchairs or requiring assistance while walking. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that the ship capsized.
