Nigeria can turn fashion, design into global cultural exports — US-based designer

Excellence Olujide, an Industrial Design major from James Madison University, USA, was selected to design a piece for the President Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. Upon being chosen for such an esteemed project, Olujide expressed excitement while acknowledging the weight of the opportunity.

Recognizing the significance of interpreting American independence through design, she aimed to delve into the complexities of freedom, access, and representation through clothing. Her design, titled "(IN)-DEPENDENCE: Constructed Femininity and the American Ideal," draws connections between women's historical experiences and broader notions of freedom.

Each element of the garment symbolizes various aspects of this exploration, such as the structured pleats gradually transitioning into flowing fabric, the corset signifying discipline, and the beaded cage surrounding the trousers, which contrasts with their utility. By reinterpreting the American flag's colors through a historical and feminine lens, Olujide aimed to create a design that reflects the intricate nature of freedom while honoring the country's rich history.

The opportunity to create the design for the museum arose through Olujide's professor, Anna Marie Smith, who remembered her interest in fashion during an Industrial Design class. Smith, having connections with the museum's curator, recommended Olujide for the project. This opportunity emerged from a simple conversation, highlighting the importance of openly expressing one's creative aspirations.

The project was ultimately part of an independent study, allowing Olujide to thoroughly research, develop, and construct the garment. Nigeria possesses a wealth of design potential, given its rich heritage in textiles, traditional techniques, and craftsmanship. By transforming this creativity into sustainable and globally competitive industries, Nigeria can generate employment opportunities for a diverse range of professionals, including designers, manufacturers, and marketers.
