‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘The Pitt’ tipped for success at Emmy Awards

Los Angeles witnessed the spotlight on television's brightest stars as the Emmy Awards commenced with the arrival of notable actors on the red carpet. Apple TV's "Widow's Bay," featuring Matthew Rhys as the leader of an isolated New England island, has gained significant attention, recently winning eight awards in pre-gala ceremonies.

If it continues its impressive performance, it could be the most awarded comedy series in a single year, surpassing the 13 trophies won by Seth Rogen's satire "The Studio." Noah Wyle, who previously won an Emmy for "The Americans," could secure his first comedy Emmy for "Widow's Bay." The competition for "Widow's Bay" is fierce, potentially denying other shows like "Hacks" the only statuette left in contention.

"Hacks," a tale of a stand-up comedian and her assistant, faces a significant challenge. For "The Pitt," the odds-on-favorite to sweep several drama prizes, a win would be a tremendous achievement, with star Noah Wyle expected to triumph again. Seven of his co-stars are also in the running for supporting acting categories. A win for "The Pitt" would be a significant accomplishment, as it leads all shows with 25 nominations and has already won four awards in the early ceremonies, including best casting for a drama series.

Among the supporting acting categories, a race between Rhea Seehorn from "Pluribus" and Keri Russell from "The Diplomat" is anticipated. In the limited series categories, HBO Max's "DTF St. Louis," a story of a middle-aged love triangle, is a top contender, with six prizes already won, including two for actors David Harbour and Linda Cardellini.

The 78th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, who previously won two Emmys for her documentary "My Mom Jayne." The ceremony will also pay tribute to late country music icon Dolly Parton, with country singer Reba McEntire expected to sing one of Parton's songs. The gala will feature performances from Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, Jaclyn Smith, and Zendaya, ensuring a red carpet moment for a current nominee for best drama actress for "Euphoria."
